Choosing the Right Pet Care: From Doggie Daycares to Dog Walkers; Here’s Your Must-Ask Questions

When it comes to caring for our furry family members, I want nothing but the best. That's where Furkids Inc. steps in, providing top-notch pet enrichment and care that goes above and beyond. We want to replace the traditional doggie daycares, dog walking and pet sitting. But I also understand that we may not be for everyone and there are other options out there. I want pet parents to feel completely empowered. So, here is everything you need to know and/or ask when you are interviewing a doggie daycare, pet sitter, or dog walker from someone who knows the business as a client and as an operator. Hold onto your bully sticks, it’s a long one.

Why Interviews Matter

Interviews are the first step in building a relationship with a potential pet care provider. They give you a chance to get to know the people who will be taking care of your beloved furkids. I really want to empower you to feel comfortable doing this. There’s something about the current pet care industry set up that makes many Pet Parents feel awkward asking these questions and that has got to change. I have felt that way when asking basic questions, like I was bothering them or insulting them. It was uncomfortable and I am fairly extroverted. Pet Parents also need to know, there is very little government licensing/ inspection in most states. Hillsborough County (where we service) requires any boarding facility to obtain a kennel license and does fall under the Department of Health inspectors route; however, this is more for feces removal and noise. You can read the very short ordinance here. Hillsborough County does have a Truth In Training ordinance requiring dog trainers obtain a license and follow some basic regulations but it’s not inspected. For now, it’s up to the pet parents.

Here's why interviews are crucial:

1. Assessing Compatibility

Just like Mary Poppins had to be a perfect fit for the Banks children, your pet care provider should be a good match for your furkids. Through an interview, you can gauge if your pet's personality and needs align with the services offered and if the company provides the safe care you demand.

2. Safety First

Safety is paramount when it comes to pet care. By interviewing a provider, you can inquire about their safety protocols, ensuring that your pets are in secure hands. After all, we want to replace those unsafe doggie daycares, dog walkers and pet sitters, right?

3. Communication

Effective communication is key to a successful pet care arrangement. Interviews allow you to discuss expectations, preferences, and any special requirements. It's all about making sure everyone's on the same page.

The Must-Ask Questions

Now, let's talk about the important questions you should be asking during these interviews. Feel free to print this out, I did!

For Doggie Daycares:

  1. Are you licensed and insured? Liability insurance covers anything that happen to your furkid. Where as there is no state license, there are PLENTY of animal science, animal behavioral, industry standard and emergency medicine licenses that can be obtained. It is an investment the care provider must want to take on.

  2. What training do you require your staff to possess?

  3. What is the staff-to-dog ratio? You want to ensure your pup receives proper attention and supervision. I prefer aa 10 or less ratio. 1 human: 10> dogs

  4. Is your entire staff pet CPR and First Aid certified?

  5. Is your staff Fear Free certified? Fear Free is a certification process that trains people on how to reduce fear, stress and anxiety while in their care for a myriad of different situations.

  6. What enrichment activities do you offer aside from just group play?

  7. Do you have mandatory rest times? Rest is super important.

  13. How often are the play areas cleaned and sanitized? A clean environment is essential for your dog's health.

  14. Do you conduct temperament assessments for new dogs? What type of education and training does the person who performs these have?

  15. What's the protocol for handling aggressive or overly dominant dogs?

  16. What’s the protocol for handling dogs who are clearly omitting signs of fear, anxiety, and stress?

  7. How do you handle unexpected situations, like encounters with aggressive dogs or wildlife? Their ability to react to unforeseen events is crucial.

  8. What's your plan for inclement weather? Make sure they have a plan to protect your dog from extreme heat, cold, or rain.

  9. Are you trained in pet first aid and CPR?

  10. Are you Fear Free certified?

  11. Do you have a backup plan if you're unable to walk my dog on a scheduled day?

  12. How do you handle leash reactivity or pulling? Understanding their approach to behavioral challenges is important.

  13. Are you familiar with the local laws and regulations regarding dogs in public spaces? They should be aware of any leash laws or rules in your area.

  14. Can you provide references from other clients you've worked with?

  15. Do you provide GPS tracking of the walk?

  16. Will you video-record your walk?

For Cat Sitters:

  1. Do you offer a free Meet & Greet?

  2. Are you licensed and insured?

  3. Are you trained in pet first aid and CPR?

  4. Are you Fear Free certified?

  6. What if my cat does not want to get into the cat carrier?

  7. What feline enrichment do you provide?

  8. Are you familiar with cat behavior and signs of distress?

  9. What if you can’t find my cat when you arrive?

  10. What will you do if my cat escapes when you open or close the exit door?

  11. Can you provide references from other clients you've worked with?

  12. Will you video-record your visit?
